Villanova basketball pulled off a dominant second-half performance to defeat Georgetown 80-73 on Saturday, with freshman guard Acaden Lewis scoring a career-high 26 points at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Acaden Lewis finished with a career-high 26 points to guide Villanova to an 80-73 road victory over Georgetown on Saturday. The standout freshman was particularly effective in the final minutes, fueling the comeback with 17 of his points coming in the final 11 minutes, with his consecutive 3-pointers just 47 seconds apart giving the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game 77-69 with 1:46 left. After the game, Lewis spoke about his approach: "I mean, I was just gritty. We [were] all gritty," Lewis said. "We was out there getting stops, running, my teammates found me."
Villanova went into halftime trailing 40-37, but the Wildcats came storming back. Duke Brennan put up 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Wildcats (18-5, 9-3 Big East) who won their third straight and completed a regular season sweep of the Hoyas. Junior guard Tyler Perkins added 15 points, marking his seventh straight game with double digits. He is averaging 17.4 points over his last seven games. In the second half, Villanova limited Georgetown to four points in the paint through the first 14 minutes. The Hoyas finished with 10 paint points in the back half.
Ever since Villanova basketball's loss to the UConn Huskies in overtime on Jan. 24, the program has won three straight, including a huge 80-73 win over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon. For Lewis, returning to his D.C. hometown made the performance extra special: A brilliant performance in his homecoming to the District of Columbia from freshman guard Acaden Lewis helped carry Villanova past Georgetown 80-73 on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. The victory puts Villanova in strong position heading into the rest of Big East play, as the team continues to gel around its new coaching staff and impressive freshman class.
