The Arizona Wildcats women's basketball team came up just short on Saturday. Arizona fought back from multiple deficits and forced overtime, but rival Arizona State pulled away late for a 75-69 victory Saturday afternoon at McKale Center. With College Gameday on campus, it turned out to be a heartbreaker for the home crowd.
After nine lead changes and nine ties, Arizona used a late 10-0 fourth-quarter run to seize momentum and tie the game at 61, eventually sending it to overtime. The Wildcats were in control with just seconds left in regulation, but McKinna Brackens got into the lane and hit the tying shot with 3.6 on the clock. That's when things unraveled for Arizona.
In the extra period, however, ASU capitalized on second-chance opportunities and timely perimeter shooting. The Sun Devils outscored Arizona 14-8 in overtime, taking their largest lead of the game in the final minute. Head coach Becky Burke reflected on the tough loss afterward, saying "We were in a position to win it, and then we did a couple silly things where we gave them some hope." Despite the loss, Noelani Cornfield led the team in scoring with 24 points. She also had four rebounds, six assists and seven steals in 41 minutes.
