The Cleveland Browns have hired former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken to be their next head coach, with a deal for five years. Monken, who turns 60 on Feb. 5, replaces Kevin Stefanski, who was fired Jan. 5 after six seasons in Cleveland. This marks the 59-year-old Monken's first NFL head-coaching position, though his resume is packed with experience building elite offensive systems at the NFL and college levels.
Monken has served as the Ravens' offensive coordinator since 2023, where he built an evolving, quarterback-friendly system for dual-threat players like Lamar Jackson. Monken previously served as the Browns' offensive coordinator in 2019, when he helped fuel a powerful running game led by Nick Chubb, who rushed for nearly 1,500 yards. He's also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and worked at the college level, giving him diverse experience. Browns GM Andrew Berry clearly valued his ability to adapt systems to different players and rosters.
In Cleveland, Monken will be tasked with rebuilding an offense that ranked last in scoring over the previous two seasons (15.8 points per game). Monken emerged as the choice in a process that also centered on Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. The Browns finished 5-12 last season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. With a young quarterback room and two first-round draft picks, Monken has the tools to rebuild—but the offensive transformation won't happen overnight.
